Class of 1974 Musters at Civil War Sites in Virginia - April 2016

Fellow Travelers,

I recently went on line and found the Collected Papers of the 74th New Jersey Cavalry on the Firestone website.  Here are some excerpts from the official History written by a Capt. L. Owsley.  Also a unit photograph taken on the Spotsylvania Battlefield:

The Famous 74th NJ US Cavalry

The 74th NJ US Cavalry won a unit citation after the Civil War for their remarkable achievements guarding General U.S. Grant’s personal whiskey wagons.  They were assigned this duty starting in the Wilderness, May of 1864, through the surrender at Appomattox.  As a unit they fought more engagements than any other US Calvary regiment in the war.  Unfortunately, the vast majority of these engagements were against other units of the United States Army.

Originally formed in Newark, they received their basic training in Princeton NJ and started a lifelong relationship with the Borough.

They seemed to be a merry band and claim to have invented the phrase friendly fire… They were notorious for sloppy inventory records and often accused of watering the merchandise.

They were led throughout the war by Col. James McPherson.  McPherson enjoyed an unimpeachable reputation for intelligence, patience, and moral rectitude.  In spite of these drawbacks, he was extremely popular with his troops…

By 1890 the 74th earned the distinction of being banned from nearly every single battlefield re-union in the country, except for the Battle of Princeton.  Few 74’ers seemed to know or care if the Battle of Princeton was even from the Civil War.  By 1904 most surviving veterans were certain that the Battle of Princeton referred to the reunion cum riot of 1894… On the eve of these reunions the Town residents would descend on Princeton Junction Rail Station and send all unmarried women north to New Haven Connecticut where they were sure to be safe..

Whenever the Grant family summered in Seagirt, NJ, they kept a cot and horse blanket in the outbuilding in case a 74 veteran was caught breaking and entering the Grant’s summer home….

Tragically, several aged veterans of the 74th went down with the Titanic as they kept asking the band on the deck to play one more rendition of Old Nassau.

Had a great time,

Arthur J. Keegan
